Sunda Straits

Situated between Indonesia’s two largest islands, Java and Sumatra, the Sunda Strait is a dynamic marine corridor that offers a wide range of wave conditions suitable for surfers of all skill levels. The region is particularly renowned for hosting two of Indonesia’s most challenging and iconic waves—One Palm Point and The Steel Vagina—located on Panaitan Island, which lies within Ujung Kulon National Park. These breaks attract advanced surfers seeking powerful, technical waves in a remote and pristine setting and while we do visit them our targets are the more user friendly waves in the region.

Beyond surfing, the Sunda Strait and its surrounding areas are rich in biodiversity. The waters teem with marine life, including dolphins, sea turtles, and vibrant coral ecosystems, while the land is home to dense tropical rainforests that support rare and endangered species such as the Javan rhinoceros, found only in Ujung Kulon. On both the Java and Sumatra sides of the strait, the areas visited are protected nature reserves, ensuring that the natural environment remains largely untouched and preserved for future generations.

This unique combination of world-class surf and ecological richness makes the Sunda Strait not only a surf destination but also a place of deep natural and cultural significance.

We generally visit the Sunda Straits 4 times a year with two trips at the start of our West Sumatra Season and two at the close of it.

Sunda Strait

For charters that begin and end in the Sunda region, our designated arrival and departure point is Jakarta. Most guests choose to spend the night in the capital both before and after their trip, allowing time to enjoy the city before boarding the vessel. On the first day of the charter, we will meet you at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport or your hotel and provide a comfortable transfer to the vessel in air-conditioned luxury vans. At the end of the trip, we will arrange your transfer back to the airport or your hotel.

For charters that begin in Sunda and end in the Mentawai Islands—or vice versa—we will meet you at the appropriate airport, either in Sumatra or Jakarta. All recommended flight details and suggested arrival and departure times are included in the travel information document provided to you in advance.
